Everybody’s Talkin’ – Lifestyle

A new way of doing on-site auctions with a van and some coffee

Popular Eastern Sydney homes go under the hammer all the time. They’re a great place to mix with the community and get people talking and what better way to bring everyone together through a cup of coffee, complimentary of course.

30 to 45 minutes before the auction period begins, auction goers, locals, gawkers and passers by gather in the Woolloomooloo neighbourhood of McElhone Street. 118 McElhone Street is a comfortable 2 bed, 1 bath, 1 garage townhouse set over two stories with multiple balconies and a bonus study nook. But it’s not the auction of the property that has brought everyone together this Saturday afternoon, it’s the coffee van out front.

“Raising awareness of the property market amongst the community is our goal for the day.” SydneyLinks’ director Trisiana Muljono says the coffee van from Xpresso Coffee and Mobile Cafe was introduced at this Wolloomooloo auction as a first for the estate agent.

“We wanted to involve the community and we got more from it than we planned”, she says. The van was hired for the event with intent of involving the auction goers but it attracted a wide range of people from the community, “We had people walking by who stopped for free coffee and ended up discussing business and the community with our buyers”.

Franchisee Fei Song attended the event with her Xpresso Mobile Cafe for the event. Providing complimentary coffee to anyone who cared to take interest was on offer, “They love it. People who haven’t been exposed to it before see it as a novelty. For others they may have seen it, so it attracts people who aren’t necessarily going to the auction”.

From casual conversation, observation of the auction, swopping of business cards and general networking, “Everyone came together over coffee and many left with a better understanding of property or the community. We will definitely be doing the coffee van again”, says Trisiana Muljono.
