Sydney comes alive: the unmissable events filling the CBD this spring and summer

From theatre and live music to Halloween, Christmas markets and harbour celebrations, Sydney’s CBD has a packed calendar ahead

Spring has arrived in Sydney, bringing longer days and a growing calendar of events to the heart of the city. From October through summer, the CBD offers plenty of reasons to stay local and explore.

Musical fans can start with SIX The Musical at Theatre Royal Sydney from 9 October. The international hit transforms the stories of Henry VIII’s six wives into an energetic pop concert. Theatre Royal’s Martin Place location also makes it an easy addition to dinner or drinks in the CBD. Find out more about SIX The Musical

Halloween brings something very different to The Rocks. Ghost in The Rocks runs from 29 October to 1 November. The historic precinct transforms with live music, immersive experiences, cinema, entertainment and suitably eerie food and drinks. Entry to the street festival is free, with some experiences ticketed separately. Explore Ghost in The Rocks

The Rocks Markets are another easy option for a weekend in the city. They run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, combining local makers, food, art and entertainment. The historic laneways and harbour setting make the markets particularly appealing as Sydney moves into warmer weather. See what’s on at The Rocks

From 15 November, Christmas at Darling Harbour brings the festive season into the city. This year’s program includes a floating Christmas tree, entertainment, family activities and waterfront celebrations. It runs until Christmas Day and includes a mixture of free and ticketed events. One weekend highlight is the Philippines Christmas Festival at Tumbalong Park on 21 and 22 November. The festival celebrates Filipino Christmas traditions in the heart of Darling Harbour.

December also brings major live music to one of Sydney’s most recognisable settings. On The Steps returns to the Sydney Opera House with outdoor concerts throughout the month. DMA’S perform on 3 December, followed by Wolf Alice, Dizzee Rascal and Dylan Gossett. Spacey Jane performs on 10 and 11 December, with The Amity Affliction following on 12 December. Families can also catch The Greatest Christmas Show at ICC Sydney on 13 December. The production combines aerial performances, illusionists, singers, dancers and Christmas favourites, with Santa also making an appearance. Find out more about The Greatest Christmas Show

Beyond the major events, Sydney’s CBD continues to offer theatre, exhibitions, markets, dining and live entertainment throughout the warmer months. It is one of the advantages of living close to the centre of Sydney. Some of the city’s biggest events are only a walk, train or light rail ride away.
