What’s On in Sydney this Summer

December 2025 into January 2026

As Sydney heats up into summer, the city really comes alive with festive cheer, world-class performances and celebrations by the harbour. For locals and visitors alike this is the perfect time to embrace all that Sydney has to offer across culture, music, community events and spectacular New Year’s festivities.

December kicks off with a vibrant line-up at Sydney Opera House. The return of The Sleeping Beauty brings the magic of ballet to the city between now and mid-December, while the 90-minute Great Opera Hits 2025 runs through to the end of the month offering lighter, sunset-set performances beneath those iconic sails. Over at the forecourt, the open-air concert series On The Steps runs from 1–15 December delivering unforgettable live music nights in one of the world’s most iconic settings. On New Year’s Eve the Opera House is again the focus with a special gala and performances lined up to help welcome 2026 in style.

If the harbour’s lights, music and art set the tone, the festive spirit spills across the city through community events and markets. The Sydney Christmas opening weekend and various Christmas concerts pop up across suburbs such as Surry Hills, Pyrmont, Glebe and Alexandria offering carolling, live music and family-friendly stalls. There’s also an Oxford Street Night Market — perfect for grabbing gifts, good food and enjoying the atmosphere.

If you’re after harbour-front festivities, Darling Harbour stages the fan-favourite Darling Harbour Christmas Festival on 13 December, with free live music, appearances from Santa, carols, roving performances, food trucks and a fireworks finale at Cockle Bay. It’s a relaxed, fun-filled way to get into the season with friends or family.

As we roll into 2026, Sydney keeps the energy flowing. Early January brings more performances at the Opera House including operas and concerts that set the tone for the year. On 17 January the enchanted production Hansel & Gretel takes the stage — a whimsical, family-friendly show and a lovely way to extend the holiday vibe into the new year.

If music is more your jam, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra stages its annual free outdoor concert Sydney Symphony Under the Stars in late January at Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour — magic beneath the night sky by the water. It’s a highlight for those who want a relaxed but memorable summer evening.

Whether you want a night out with culture, a family-friendly festival or a relaxed evening under the stars, Sydney has something on for everyone this summer.
