Darlinghurst

Colloquially known as Darlo, Darlinghurst is an inner-city eastern suburb of Sydney NSW. The suburb is located immediately east of the Sydney central business district. Darlinghurst underwent major urban renewal after the 1980s, transforming from the city’s red light district into an upmarket, sophisticated and culturally diverse community. Darlinghurst is surrounded by the suburbs of Surry Hills, Paddington, Rushcutters Bay, Potts Point and Woolloomooloo.

Transport

Bus services provide ample public transportation in Darlinghurst. The Sydney CBD and many other destinations are within walking distance of the suburb. While there is no train station within Darlinghurst, King’s Cross station lies just over its northern border – only a short walk away.

Local Culture

Darlinghurst has a rich and diverse local culture that combines the historic and modern. Victoria Street, which joins Darlinghurst and Kings Cross, is particularly rich in history with beautiful buildings such as the Darlinghurst Fire Station. Darlinghurst is home to many museums including the Sydney Jewish Museum.

Darlinghurst is known around the world as the centre of Sydney’s gay and lesbian community. Oxford Street is the home of many gay venues, as well as the Sydney Mardi Gras.

Community and Recreation

Darlinghurst is a densely populated community, with most residents living in apartments or terrace houses. A variety of shops are scattered through the suburb, as well as many pubs and a wide array of culturally influenced cuisines.

Since Darlinghurst’s urban renewal project, Oxford Street has developed a reputation for being Sydney’s primary “nightclub strip”. Restaurants in the area are open late. The suburb’s nightlife draws both gay and straight clubbers; Darlinghurst is busier today, than ever before.
