Immediately South-East of Sydney’s busy central business district sits the suburb of Surry Hills. This popular suburb of Sydney NSW is a unique blend of residential, commercial, and light industrial areas.

The suburb was named after the Surrey Hills in Surrey, England by European settler Major Joseph Foveaux.

Residents and commuters in Surry Hills have limitless transport options. The Western edge of the suburb is home to Central Railway Station, the largest station on the CityRail network.

State Transit Authority buses serve multiple routes in the area and provide regular services to Sydney and the surrounding suburbs.  Surry Hills is within walking distance of several popular destinations, including Sydney’s CBD.

Local Culture

Surry Hills was established in 1790s by European settlers. The suburb’s mix of residential and industrial areas, as well as its proximity to Sydney’s CBD provides an eclectic blend of trendy, wealthy and working class cultures. The area is home to large single dwelling houses as well as high density, trendy loft-style apartments. A large number of historic homes have been converted to multi-unit dwellings, as well as hostels to accommodate its growing transient population.

Community and Recreation

Prince Alfred Park and Harmony Park provide excellent venues for outdoor sporting activities. Surry Hills also offers many artistic venues including the Belvoir Street Theatre. Centennial Plaza and the Surry Hills Community Centre are also popular recreation destinations.

Surry Hills is well known for its restaurants and multi-cultural food. In addition to its parks and venues Surry Hills has one of Sydney’s highest concentrations of restaurants and pubs. Residents and visitors have a range of culturally inspired cuisine to choose from and the area is buzzing every night of the week.
