Pyrmont

Pyrmont

Pyrmont is Sydney NSW’s most densely populated inner-city suburb, located just 2 km south-west of Sydney’s central business district.

Once home to the wharfs, shipbuilding yards and factories that were vital to Sydney’s industrial waterfront, the area saw significant decline at the end of that era. Pyrmont has recently undergone significant redevelopment and now the suburb is a favourite for modern residential living and trendy office space.

Transport Links

Pyrmont is serviced by state transit buses, with multiple routes running through the suburb. Sydney Ferries provide water transport to popular harbour-side and water destinations.

Four light rail stations are also scattered throughout Pyrmont, therefore commuters have no shortage of choices for their transport services.

Local Culture

The area that is now Pyrmont was first inhabited by the Eora Aboriginal tribe. European settlers took over the area in 1795 and it soon evolved into a working class industrial port community. Pyrmont was the home of the first Presbyterian Church in the European settlements and a vital centre for waterfront trade.

Today many of Pyrmont’s original buildings still stand and are listed on the Register of the National Estate. Union Square is the home of many of these buildings, including the Harlequin Inn pub. Pyrmont is also the headquarter location of many well-known brands, including Google and American Express Australia.

Community and Recreation

As well as the historic tours, Pyrmont offers a wide assortment of recreational activities for residents and visitors. The Star Casino draws visitors from all over Sydney for gambling and prestigious entertainment events. Pyrmont is also the home of the famous Sydney fish market, offering fresh seafood selections from Australia’s ocean waters daily. An extensive selection of pubs and restaurants also serve the Pyrmont area.
